Obsidian: Glass, Not Crystal

Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools so quickly that crystals do not have time to grow. The result is dense volcanic glass. It can be black, brown, mahogany, grey-green, rainbow-sheened, or snowflake-patterned, but its identity is not the color. Its identity is the glass structure.

The best clue is fracture. Broken obsidian often shows curved, shell-like surfaces known as conchoidal fracture. It looks like glass because it is glass. Polished obsidian beads can be extremely smooth and reflective, but they usually have a deep, liquid black surface rather than the fibrous or ribbed surface of black tourmaline.

In jewelry, obsidian feels visually sharp: clean, glossy, almost mirror-like. It is beautiful, but it is not the only black stone worth wearing.

Black Tourmaline: Ribbed, Dense, Crystalline

Black tourmaline is usually schorl, an iron-rich member of the tourmaline group. Unlike obsidian, it grows as a crystal. Raw pieces often show vertical striations: long ribbed lines running down the length of the crystal.

This is the easiest way to separate raw black tourmaline from raw obsidian. Tourmaline looks built. Obsidian looks broken from a flow of glass. In bead form, the difference becomes subtler, but tourmaline usually reads denser and less mirror-like, with a more still, mineral surface.

Onyx and Black Agate: Quartz Family, Not Volcanic Glass

Onyx belongs to the agate and chalcedony world, which means it is part of the quartz family. In traditional usage, onyx refers to banded agate, often black and white. In modern jewelry, the name is often applied broadly to smooth black chalcedony or dyed black agate.

Compared with obsidian, onyx usually feels more waxy than glassy. It takes a polished surface well, but the reflection is calmer and less liquid. If there is banding, even faintly, that is another clue that you are looking at agate or chalcedony, not obsidian.

Hematite: The Heavy Metallic One

Hematite is iron oxide. It can look black or steel-grey, but its surface gives it away. Polished hematite has a metallic shine that obsidian and onyx do not have. It is also noticeably heavy for its size.

The classic test is streak: hematite leaves a reddish-brown mark on unglazed porcelain. That is not a test to perform on finished jewelry casually, but it explains the material. Hematite may look black on the wrist, yet its body is tied to iron, not glass or quartz.

Shungite and Jet: Carbon, Not Stone in the Usual Sense

Shungite and jet sit outside the usual crystal conversation. They are carbon-rich materials, usually described as mineraloids rather than true minerals. Jet is organic in origin, derived from ancient wood under pressure. Shungite is a carbon-rich natural material whose name is used in different ways in science and commerce.

Visually, these materials tend to feel softer than obsidian. They can be matte, satin, or gently polished, but they do not have obsidian's glass fracture, tourmaline's ribbed crystal habit, or hematite's metallic weight.

How to Tell What You Are Looking At

If it looks like broken black glass:

It may be obsidian, especially if the surface is glossy and the broken edge curves in shell-like waves.

If it has vertical ribs:

It is more likely black tourmaline, especially if the raw crystal looks columnar and striated.

If it is very heavy and metallic:

It may be hematite. Hematite has a steel-grey metallic surface and much more weight than most black stone beads.

If it is smooth, waxy, and evenly black:

It may be onyx or black agate, especially in bead jewelry. Banding, if visible, points toward the agate family.
